Could've Been Better
"I was really looking forward to seeing Lyle Lovett and his Small Large Band in person, as I've been a forever fan. The show opened with "Got To Be Somebody's Baby," which sounded great, but then he and his very talented crew strung together several songs that I'd never heard before! The second set continued with unfamiliar music, but by the time he wrapped up he'd played four more of his hits. Most of the first set was lost on me. The set list should be assembled for the benefit of the audience, not the artist. I understand that playing the same songs for 50 years must get boring -- hence the unfamiliar (to me) music. The show was very low energy, with most of the tunes not rocking at all. Lyle Lovett and his Small Large Band were cordial with the audience, with plenty of good humor thrown in, but they spoke so low that it was difficult to hear what they were saying. The lead guitarist was exceptional! Too bad the camera crew never showed a front view of him. Curtain call was the Eagles' "Taking It Easy," which sounded fine. Also, ?????."
